Here we are presented with several options, two of which are ceiling fans<\/strong> and air conditioners<\/strong>. Each with its pros and cons, each with its myths and legends.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”60px”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][wyde_heading style=”2″ subheading_tag=”span” text_align=”center” title=”Ceiling fan or air conditioner” subheading=”What uses less electricity?”][vc_column_text]Undoubtedly, the economic aspect<\/strong> plays a fundamental role when it comes to choosing one or the other. At Arteconfort we want to clarify how much these two air conditioning systems consume, so we have prepared the comparison below.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”60px”][wyde_heading style=”2″ title_tag=”h4″ subheading_tag=”span” text_align=”center” title=”How much does a ceiling fan cost”][vc_row_inner vertical_align=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image img_size=”thumbnail” style=”circle” alignment=”center” image=”18625″][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3\/4″][vc_column_text]It is very easy to calculate the consumption of an electrical appliance<\/strong>, such as a ceiling fan or an air conditioner. All you need to know is the power of the appliance, i.e. the consumption in watts (W). This information will be indicated by the manufacturer on the outside of the box or in the instruction manual.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]To make it easier for you, we are going to calculate the power consumption of the CRETA ceiling fan<\/a>. The first thing we will do is the calculation for a use in first rotation speed, for 8 hours a day in a month<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The CRETA model has a consumption of 4.9W (let’s round it up to 5W) at speed 1. With this assumption we will simulate the use of ceiling fans<\/strong> in many areas of Spain, since in the summer season and due to the high temperatures, in order to fall asleep it is necessary to keep the fan on all night at a low speed in the bedrooms.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]So, to find out the monthly cost in euros, we must start by knowing the consumption in kilowatts\/hour. First, we multiply the power of the fan by the number of hours in operation, resulting in the total energy consumed in watt hours (Wh)<\/strong>. This is the energy consumed by the fan in a day<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”60px”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner text_align=”center” padding_size=”l-padding” background_color=”#f5f5f5″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

5 Watts x 8 hours = 40 Wh<\/p>\n

(watt hours in a day)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”60px”][vc_column_text]The next step is to calculate the result of the energy consumed in kilowatt hours<\/strong>, as this is the unit of measurement in electricity billing<\/strong>. This is obtained by dividing the watt hours by 1,000, as shown below:[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner text_align=”center” padding_size=”l-padding” background_color=”#f5f5f5″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

40 Wh \/ 1.000 = 0,04 KWh<\/p>\n

(kilowatt hours in a day)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”60px”][vc_column_text]Once we have calculated the consumption of our fan in kilowatt hours in a day, we can multiply it by the price of electricity and thus obtain the daily cost<\/strong> in euros. For this, we have taken as a reference the price of 0.4 Euro per kilowatt\/hour. This is an average price calculated without taxes that may vary depending on the contract you have with your electricity company.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner text_align=”center” padding_size=”l-padding” background_color=”#f5f5f5″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

0,04 KWh x 0,34 \u20ac\/KWh = 0,0136 \u20ac<\/p>\n

(Spending in euros in one day)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”60px”][vc_column_text]Finally, we only need to multiply the cost of one day by 30 to calculate how much a ceiling fan with DC motor spends per month<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner text_align=”center” padding_size=”l-padding” background_color=”#f5f5f5″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

0,0136 \u20ac x 30 days = 0,408 \u20ac<\/p>\n

(Expenditure in euros in one month)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”60px”][vc_column_text]The result of our calculation, as you can see, is that a ceiling fan running daily for 8 hours<\/strong>, spends only 40 euro cents<\/strong> per month. This is similar to the minimum consumption of a mobile phone charger<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Many times we are afraid to turn on our ceiling fan because of the electricity consumption it can generate. But, as you have been able to see, by doing these calculations we will get rid of this fear and we will realise that we can have our fan on for many hours without increasing our electricity bill. The comfort and well-being<\/strong> it provides us with during the hottest periods of the year is enormous.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”100px”][wyde_heading style=”2″ title_tag=”h4″ subheading_tag=”span” text_align=”center” title=”How much an air conditioner spends”][vc_row_inner vertical_align=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image img_size=”thumbnail” style=”circle” alignment=”center” image=”6945″][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3\/4″][vc_column_text]On the other hand, to find out the consumption of an air-conditioning appliance, we will make the same calculations. It is clear that, within the range of air conditioning options, there are models with different consumptions, depending on the technology used.<\/p>\n

We are going to make the simulation with an appliance with a consumption of 1,000W<\/strong>, as this is a good average for the subject we are dealing with. In this sense, there are more modern models with lower consumption, but, besides being more expensive, not everyone installs this type of device.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]Also, we will take into account the same time of use (8 hours per day) in order to be able to make a comparison under the same conditions. If we talk about ceiling fans, we can say in their favour:<\/p>\n

  • The initial economic investment is low<\/strong>, we can find models with the most advanced DC motors for less than 200 euros.<\/li>\n
  • Monthly electricity costs are minimal<\/strong>, as we have seen in the previous calculations.<\/li>\n
  • Another advantage is that we can use them while we sleep, as they do not make noise<\/strong> (they are practically imperceptible, up to 20 dBs at speed 1).<\/li>\n
  • They do not dry out the air<\/strong>, avoiding sore throats, muscle aches, headaches and colds.<\/li>\n
  • We can control them comfortably by means of the remote control<\/strong> which, in the case of the BORA model, allows us to choose the colour temperature, the speed or to program its operation for a certain period of time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The disadvantage of ceiling fans is that they do not cool the air<\/strong>, but rather move it, generating air circulation. The circulation of air over the skin disperses body heat, causes sweat to evaporate and intensifies the feeling of coolness, thus reducing the thermal sensation by up to 6\u00b0C less.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][wyde_separator text_align=”center” el_width=”60%” color=”#cccccc”][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_column_text]An air conditioner, on the other hand, does cool the air:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • It does cool the air<\/strong> and you can choose the desired temperature.<\/li>\n
    • We can control them comfortably by remote control<\/strong> and choose the exact temperature we want, as well as programming its operation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      On the other hand, it has a number of disadvantages compared to a ceiling fan:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Starting with the large initial financial investment<\/strong>: you can find models from around 500 euros, but they are the least efficient and least recommended.<\/li>\n
      • The monthly cost is high<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      • They require a more complex installation<\/strong>, with the condenser having to be installed outside with a drainage outlet.<\/li>\n
      • They require more maintenance<\/strong>, filter cleaning and gas recharging.
        \nIn addition, they dry out the environment and generate bacteria<\/strong> that accumulate in the filters, worsening air quality and affecting the respiratory tract, skin and eyes, causing sore throats, headaches and muscle aches, as well as colds, allergies and pneumonia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
